Charles Grub the doctor who initiaed this study on psilocybin and magic mushrooms visited the shamans in the amazon who use ayahuasca and was inspired by their ability to treat depression and drug addiction. This led him to experiment with magic mushrooms and psilocybin on cancer patients suffering from end of life anxiety and depression.

This study was done on Divinity students at john Hopkins university. 36 volunteers took psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushroom. The volunteers had very deeply spiritual experience and most said that the magic mushroom experience had mystical life affirming qualities.
